To stay current in any field it is important to continually educate ourselves to the latest business techniques and trends like “building green.”
Five years ago how many of us knew much about “green building and remodeling?” The terms, “building green” and “sustainability”, were out there. There were websites and companies up and running for the “green revolution.” Did most of us pay a lot of attention to it all? I would venture to say that we probably did not.
Now we hear about it on a daily basis. Greenburg, Kansas, a small city of 1280 people, practically wiped off the map by a huge tornado in 2007, is rebuilding itself “green”. It just opened a hospital that is Leeds Platinum Certified. That is not an easy rating to get.
In fact, it already has more Leeds Platinum Certified buildings and homes than any other community in the United States. That is from a dead start just three years ago.
Your customers and potential customers are hearing and reading about these things. Are you? You had better be because you are going to be asked about how “green” you are very soon if you have not been already. It is only a matter of time.
Like any other subject on the internet, there is a ton of information out there right now. It is not “rocket science” and difficult to learn; it is a lot about just plain old “common sense.”
You will probably find that you have already made some adjustments to your way of building that is “greener” than you realize. For example, most of us are much more conscious of the energy efficiency of our building envelopes that we were a few years ago.
Now it is time to step up your efforts to learn all you can and to put that knowledge into your company’s building practices. It is not just good for the environment; it is good for the future of your business.
